The largest departments, ranked

The 208 agencies recorded in enough deaths for the figures to mean something.

The largest police department in the United States is the New York Police Department, with 33,604 sworn officers in 2025. The next four are Chicago Police Department (11,542), Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office (8,715), Los Angeles Police Department (8,663), California Highway Patrol (7,168). Sworn officer counts come from the FBI's own employee collection, so the table below ranks by size as well as by deaths.

There are about 4,641 law enforcement agencies in this database. Most appear once or twice. We publish a page only for the 208 recorded in at least 12 incidents, because a page built on one or two says nothing and thousands of near-empty pages would make the site worse.

A measurement, not a judgement. A big department records more incidents than a small one, which is why the table now carries a rate as well as a count. The rate is deaths per 1,000 sworn officers per year, measured against the agency's average strength across the same years the deaths are counted over, not against its strength today. It is shown only where the FBI holds at least five years of employee data for that agency; everywhere else the column is blank rather than estimated. A small department's rate moves a long way on one incident, so read the officer count next to it. Nothing here is a finding against any department or officer.
